This can lead to the addiction becoming more of a problem, which makes recovery more difficult. It then creates a cycle: when the organisation doesn’t recognise an employee has an addiction, HR managers and other employees can’t offer support. Prevailing stigmas around addiction – including beliefs that substance abuse is a personal choice – can potentially mean employees hide the true impact of their problem. Why has addiction become an issue amongst working professionals in particular? There are a few reasons. It’s more common in general: we surveyed the UK public in July 2022 and found over a third of people currently have or previously had an addiction disorder or know someone in the same situation. The reason I’m sharing this is because I think employers need to consider the increasing number of people experiencing addiction. But over time, as I failed to deal with worry, fear and not knowing who I was, I developed a serious addiction that would leave me lifeless, losing everything I’d worked for. We were used to having a few drinks at lunch or after work, and this was the norm for all of us. Fortunately or unfortunately, in my deterioration, I still made it to VP. Hoping, praying that I would feel better the next. I’d continuously drink, unnoticed, throughout the day and until I drank enough of an evening to pass out. At the peak of my alcoholism, I’d drink a bottle of wine before I’d even started work to stop shaking.
